Going Miles for Spirituality

October 11th 2009

No matter that the economy is in the tank. No matter that we’re all tapped.

Bad Hip (that’s me) and Bad Back (my friend Carole) are headed to Machu Picchu!

How do we afford this, you might ask?

Mileage, of course! We’re taking advantage of Carol’s AADVANTAGE® Mileage Program to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World. At a time when cash is is nonexistent, AADVANTAGE® Miles may very well be the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Guess all that spending had a silver lining after all. I thank Carole from the bottom of my heart for sharing her miles with me. I can’t wait to share this trip with her. How wonderful to visit such a spiritual place at a time when we all need to re-examine our values.

Mom Goes to the Beach

October 7th 2009

Mom is 80 and comes from a small farming community in South Dakota. No beaches there.

So I wanted to get her out to see this part of Miami not visible from her nursing home.

Her sense of wonder at - and her fear of - what she was seeing gave me the chills and brought on a tear or two.

Mom has been to the beach before but she has no memory of that - or of anything for that matter. Dementia took her brain awhile back and is not going to return it.

So I prefer to believe that no matter how old or infirm one is, one can always enjoy a “new” experience.

Oh yeah - and she ordered a beer too. I guess her I-LIKE-BEER memory chip was firing.

Seems we remember the really important things after all.
