Soffer Collective Honored by ADFED

September 29th 2009

tsc-wall-1

Last Monday night, ADFED MIAMI gave The Soffer Collective both a wonderful honor and a forum in which to speak. I am profoundly grateful for both.

The Soffer Collective won 23 ADDY awards this year and was one of only 5 local companies to win a National Addy. We are proud beyond words.

So the words I chose to express my thoughts to the group that night reflected the cold hard truth:  I have put The Soffer Collective on ice. Indefinitely. Maybe forever. Or until tomorrow. Don’t know yet.

I had to tell the truth because I value my peers, my friends, our industry and the young, hungry, creative minds in the room. We owe each other honesty. I could not stand up in front of everyone and pretend that things were chill. Lying sucks and has no soul. I have been a marketer long enough to know that.

One big bad bear, of course, is the economy. But I have also come to realize that there were (are) other big bad bears at work.

Most start with de — deception, devaluation, all the usual de- suspects. But perhaps most significant is the de-humanization of business, which I ultimately found intolerably painful and responsible for my current dispassion.

The biz world just got really crappy.

I’m a big one for new things and moving on to see what is over the next hill. At my stage in life it’s not about mountains–which is very cool. I simply need to be involved in what matters and what makes sense, in something where people and service count more than anything, which of course makes everything count.

Anyone who knows The Soffer Collective Wall gets what I am talking about. Our wall was our soul, our core, our power. Our company was about one simple thing–OUR PEOPLE. That made everything else work.

I know one gajillion million percent that our success was based on one thing and one thing only–OUR PEOPLE.

Yeah, Power to the People. Good anthems die hard.

By the way: A win by default is not a win. It is perhaps the biggest, emptiest kind of loss there is. You know who you are.

My next win will be just like my last - based on honesty, love and respect for people. Core values, everyone. Core values.

I look forward to discovering what that will look like.  In the meantime, I am traveling and learning and listening and feeling and loving and exploring and will be here as usual- sharing all that I find.

With who??

PEOPLE.

Of course.

You know who you are. I love you all.

Now What?

September 19th 2009

I found this today on the Graffiti Research Lab website (http://graffitiresearchlab.com/).

Does it hit a nerve with anyone besides me? img_3043jpg

The country didn’t even go on sale. We never had that chance. One day it was simply over.

So now what?

Last I heard, the recession is over too.

What does that mean to people like us?? Do I get back my book of business I worked 13 hard years to develop?

Somehow I very much doubt it.

Because businesses like mine have been devalued in this new economy. Nobody can pay for great ideas and great work. They still want it, to be sure. They just can’t/won’t pay. And they don’t have to.

Because we now have this big free art gallery called the Internet. While it’s a great source of inspiration, it’s also the land of creative thievery.

Yes, it’s over. It’s also the beginning. Of what I am not sure. That, of course, is the million-dollar question.

Design Blog Sociale - 7th January 2009 - Evan Roth Typographic Illustration for Jay-Z video

September 19th 2009

Anyone who has worked with me knows my passion and appreciation for the art of typesetting.

I am not a graphic artist so I am banished to a life of art direction and observation, which is creative purgatory.  As such,  I am on a constant search for design that moves and amazes me. And my bar is set pretty high.

Today’s discovery surpasses all expectations. Feast your eyes on this work of art by the amazing Evan Roth ( http://evan-roth.com).

I could cry.

Maybe in my next life . . .?

Steely Mesh Mindfuck (says CURBED NY)

September 16th 2009

3926151848_938c8f8c4a_oWish I could claim the headline as my own. No such luck. Someone got there long before I did.

I probably like it mostly because “fuck” is one of my all-time favorite words. No matter, because in this instance it contributes to the perfect description of the new Cooper Union academic building in New York’s Bowery.

I remember the days when the Bowery was home to the homeless and a hangout for drunks.

And now it is home to the absolute coolest building in all of New York City.

Innovation lives on in America, no matter how messed up we are at the moment.

This piece of art comes from LA architect Thom Mayne.

Freaking awesome.

She’s 80, She’s Beautiful, and She’s Mine

Mommy is 80

September 6, 2009. Mommy turns 80

Mommy and I had a fantastic girls day out for her 80th, complete with a trip to the beauty salon and then on to a great lunch.

I am blessed to have this time with her, and nothing makes me happier than seeing her face light up like a child’s when I walk into her nursing home.

in the end, family is all life is ever really about. And I realize that so much of what I have done in my life is so much of what she wanted to do but couldn’t but for the constraints of her era.

No matter, for she is the most creative, funny, spirited person I have ever met. I admire her for raising six kids, under humble, challenging circumstances, in such a happy home.

I only regret that it took me too many years to understand that she is a person too, not just my mother.

Why do we have to get so old to be so smart?

I love you Mom. Happy Birthday and oh so many more. Being your daughter has been an honor and my greatest pleasure.
