Michigan: Brilliant Heart-Based Branding + Positioning

June 19th 2010

So here’s a state that has been decimated with the loss of much of its main industry- automobile manufacturing.

So what they did was shift the focus –from Detroit and its problems to their other abundant natural assets.

What they have done is respond to human needs.

First, there’s the series of Pure Michigan commercials that uses emotional and heartfelt messages of a quiet, healthy, safe respite in a really scary world, whether it’s on land or on their many unpolluted waterways. And they are telling the truth. Michigan is a well-kept secret and absolutely gorgeous with natural resources that take ones’ breath away. Don’t miss it.

Perhaps the most priceless resource they have is their people. They are honest, loyal, hard-working, community-minded survivors. They are midwesterners.

So, in the spirit of survival, they are working hard to become a film capital. Yes, you heard me. They have gone Film Friendly. In a big way. Last year, the Michigan legislature passed nearly unanimously the best film and commercial production incentive package in the nation. They know they need to create a new industry to replace what once was. What innovation! Incredibly creative thinking! In addition to Mother Nature’s stage, imagine all the available studio space that can be created from abandoned or closed auto plants.

Florida is really missing the mark here. We have, and have had for years, ample opportunity to become Hollywood West. We, too, have incredible natural resources and one more thing Michigan can’t claim-amazing weather.

I can’t imagine why we are not pursuing this.

Anyway, bravo to Michigan. Makes me proud to be a midwesterner.

This Made Me Cry

March 6th 2010

Wow. Here is something incredible.

It’s from the heart, in humble, non-produced, bathroom/bedroom/closet/livingroom “studios.” Insanely creative. Clearly a labor of love.

There is nothing more powerful than raw passion. Bravo and thank you to everyone involved in this piece.

Design Blog Sociale - 7th January 2009 - Evan Roth Typographic Illustration for Jay-Z video

September 19th 2009

Anyone who has worked with me knows my passion and appreciation for the art of typesetting.

I am not a graphic artist so I am banished to a life of art direction and observation, which is creative purgatory.  As such,  I am on a constant search for design that moves and amazes me. And my bar is set pretty high.

Today’s discovery surpasses all expectations. Feast your eyes on this work of art by the amazing Evan Roth ( http://evan-roth.com).

I could cry.

Maybe in my next life . . .?

There’s a Whole Big World Out There

August 19th 2009

the-vatican

Just got back from Italy, which is trip #1 on my bucket list. AMAZING- and it’s my fifth trip there. Italy always amazes me.

What a magical place, where history trumps modern day, where art is everywhere, where food and wine rule, and where one can go to be reminded that our little speck on this planet is indeed just that–a little speck.

Being there begs the question: Will we learn from history?

I think not. We never do.

Can you imagine an American shopping mall ruin lasting 1500 years?

Yes, it is still 954.524.1600

March 26th 2009

The Soffer Collective is excited to be moving into BRAND NEW OFFICES tomorrow, March 26, 2009.  The phone companies are, to say the least, uncooperative with each other to the point of distraction/disruption/destruction.

Hellooooo! We are keeping the number we have had for the past 8 years.

However, for the next few days, when you call it you will get a message that says our number has been disconnected and it will give you a 954.367.6594 alternative. That line will answer as of tomorrow at our new digs. Use it until the phone gods can get their crap together.

Soon we will all go back to 954.524.1600 and the world will once again be whole.
