Michigan: Brilliant Heart-Based Branding + Positioning

June 19th 2010

So here’s a state that has been decimated with the loss of much of its main industry- automobile manufacturing.

So what they did was shift the focus –from Detroit and its problems to their other abundant natural assets.

What they have done is respond to human needs.

First, there’s the series of Pure Michigan commercials that uses emotional and heartfelt messages of a quiet, healthy, safe respite in a really scary world, whether it’s on land or on their many unpolluted waterways. And they are telling the truth. Michigan is a well-kept secret and absolutely gorgeous with natural resources that take ones’ breath away. Don’t miss it.

Perhaps the most priceless resource they have is their people. They are honest, loyal, hard-working, community-minded survivors. They are midwesterners.

So, in the spirit of survival, they are working hard to become a film capital. Yes, you heard me. They have gone Film Friendly. In a big way. Last year, the Michigan legislature passed nearly unanimously the best film and commercial production incentive package in the nation. They know they need to create a new industry to replace what once was. What innovation! Incredibly creative thinking! In addition to Mother Nature’s stage, imagine all the available studio space that can be created from abandoned or closed auto plants.

Florida is really missing the mark here. We have, and have had for years, ample opportunity to become Hollywood West. We, too, have incredible natural resources and one more thing Michigan can’t claim-amazing weather.

I can’t imagine why we are not pursuing this.

Anyway, bravo to Michigan. Makes me proud to be a midwesterner.

ArtMiami/Art Basel 2009

December 6th 2009

ArtMiami and Art Basel were fab this year, as was the art at satellite galleries around the city. The city was mobbed no matter where one went. What bad economy?? Great energy everywhere!

Wynwood wins the prize for growing into the Arts District it was always intended to be, as envisioned decades ago by Tony Goldman and other brilliant minds. In particular, graffiti art gave the area a vibe to be reckoned with that no ad campaign ever could.

I know, because my company did all the Midtown Miami branding + advertising a few years back, paying homage to this emerging area of creativity and artistry and encouraging early adopters to settle and crack it open. As good we imagined Wynwood would one day become, what we saw yesterday was a huge step forward and unimaginably over-the-top cool. Basquiat and other graffiti geniuses would be proud.

Miami, you are lookin’ good. More. We want more.

As always, what caught my eye were line drawings and amazing uses of type.  Rocker Patti Smith’s work was off the chart.

Pictured below is a page from the AUDI concept book at ArtMiami. AUDI rocked as a big part of this year’s show. Who knew?

Only One Way to Go Now - Up.

December 1st 2009

This video clip so inspired me this morning that I must share it. It’s about the advertising industry but could really be about any industry whose jobs have been destroyed or made otherwise irrelevant by the financial meltdown.

These are stories of people like me and where they are now, after the big fall. With a huge thank you to Eric Proulx, who wrote this movie, I am finally understanding that life will go on and will become better that it was before.

The stories in this movie have inspired me to make this life course - correction and not fear the outcome. I’m done with fear.
It’s time for action.

5 Reasons Creatives Hate Working for You.

Leading creative people is like herding cats. They sometimes appear to be all over the place, to be mischievous, off in their own worlds, extremely curious and can be a tad hard to manage at times. But your business needs them and they need you, and when you get to understand and know creative people, gain their confidence and respect, then extraordinary things happen.

Unfortunately most leaders don’t take the time to understand that creative people work, behave and think differently, and that in order to utilize their genius you need to provide them with a stimulating and conducive environment. So…here’s 5 mistakes that businesses make which will ensure their creative people will hate working for them.

1. Segregate them.
Creative people love hanging out with other creative people. It’s stimulates them, allows them to bounce ideas around, gives them a sense of camaraderie. So whatever you do, make sure your creative people get to network and hangout with others (within and without your organisation).

2. Same, same, same.
Creative people love variety. They are by nature curious. It’s what creativity is all about… trying new things, exploring new territories, it’s what keeps creative people fresh and inspired. So whatever you do, don’t keep giving them the same brief just because they did a good job last time. Mix it up, challenge them, and keep things interesting.

3. Contain their expertise.
In a recent survey we conducted, one of the key things that kept popping up for creatives was the ability to keep learning new skills. It’s important to allow your creative people to attend courses and seminars or just hang out in other areas with other people and learn how to do different things. And don’t be too concerned if it’s not industry or job related because it all adds and the best inspiration often comes from outside sources.

4. Play the money game.
Listen. One thing I know from experience is that most creative people really love stability of income and although it’s not always their major driver it is important. So you need to pay them well and pay them consistently. If you start playing games financially you’ll only upset things.

5. Act superior.
One thing you can never do with creative people is act superior or above them. Although Creative people understand and appreciate hierarchy and chain of command, what they don’t respect or like is someone who throws their weight around. Creative people are happy knowing someone’s in charge, and knowing what’s required of them, but they also need your respect. So lead them, mentor them, guide them, include them but don’t manage them or boss them about.

Now What?

September 19th 2009

I found this today on the Graffiti Research Lab website (http://graffitiresearchlab.com/).

Does it hit a nerve with anyone besides me? img_3043jpg

The country didn’t even go on sale. We never had that chance. One day it was simply over.

So now what?

Last I heard, the recession is over too.

What does that mean to people like us?? Do I get back my book of business I worked 13 hard years to develop?

Somehow I very much doubt it.

Because businesses like mine have been devalued in this new economy. Nobody can pay for great ideas and great work. They still want it, to be sure. They just can’t/won’t pay. And they don’t have to.

Because we now have this big free art gallery called the Internet. While it’s a great source of inspiration, it’s also the land of creative thievery.

Yes, it’s over. It’s also the beginning. Of what I am not sure. That, of course, is the million-dollar question.

Design Blog Sociale - 7th January 2009 - Evan Roth Typographic Illustration for Jay-Z video

September 19th 2009

Anyone who has worked with me knows my passion and appreciation for the art of typesetting.

I am not a graphic artist so I am banished to a life of art direction and observation, which is creative purgatory.  As such,  I am on a constant search for design that moves and amazes me. And my bar is set pretty high.

Today’s discovery surpasses all expectations. Feast your eyes on this work of art by the amazing Evan Roth ( http://evan-roth.com).

I could cry.

Maybe in my next life . . .?
